My partner Kev and I started training 3 times per week with PT Taylored in 2011. Our goals were to get fit, manage some of the stress caused by starting a new business and perform better during our upcoming snowboarding trip. We noticed an improvement in our health, fitness and general attitudes almost straight away – and we had an awesome time snowboarding!
In March 2012 I was hit by a car when I was riding my motorbike and seriously injured my pelvis, femur, foot and ankle. It was clear that it was going to be a long recovery, and so Kev and I decided to keep training with Ruth in order to maintain our health and as much normality as possible. While Kev’s fitness goals remained the same, my abilities and goals immediately changed more than I could have imagined. Where once I was training to run in the City to Surf – now I needed to develop my upper body strength in order to be able to shower by myself, use crutches and a wheelchair and to get my wheelchair in and out of my car unassisted. Ruth helped me to develop goals and modified my workouts to accommodate my physical condition, often on a daily basis. She was flexible and worked around us if I couldn’t leave the house, was recovering from further surgeries or was restricted to my wheelchair. Some days she would take one look at my face and just get the boxing gloves out! She also managed payments through the Insurance Commission of WA and worked with my Physiotherapist as required.
Maybe most importantly for us at the time, Ruth became a great friend and source of incredible support. She was always positive and thoughtful – especially on days when I was emotional or really suffering with pain and immobility. I have no doubt that having her regular presence in my life during that time made an incredible difference to my mental and physical health and significantly contributed to my recovery. We have since moved house and could no longer train with Ruth, but we continue to use training methods that she taught us to train each other and stay healthy. Ever since my accident I have been planning to have a celebratory Walking Party and Ruth was the first person I invited. The Walking Party has now been 3 years in the making – I haven’t forgotten your invitation Ruth, it will be in the mail as soon as I throw away my stupid crutches!! Thanks for everything. Aimee and Kev.
